Like many Singaporean households, 70-year-old Madam Tan Ann finds clothes piling up in the wardrobes and most of them are apparel that her family hasn’t worn in a while.
“I think most of us are just not ruthless enough in decluttering old clothes because we think that we may wear them again one day,” laughed the part-time cashier who resides in Teck Ghee.
When Mdm Tan chanced upon a textile recycling bin located outside the Ang Mo Kio Town Council office at Blk 342 Ang Mo Kio Ave 1, she knew it was the solution to her problem. She made it a point to bring some preloved clothes to recycle every time she went shopping for groceries in the neighbourhood.
“The bin is located within 10 minutes from where I stay, and I can easily recycle small piles of clothes whenever I visit the market,” she said.
Mdm Tan feels that the bright yellow bin will attract people to find out more. She said: “You just can’t miss it, and I hope it will encourage more people to bring their unwanted textile items to give them a new lease of life.”
Collection from the bins is transported to a recycling facility and sorted for three broad purposes – reuse, upcycling and recycling. Those deemed to be in acceptable condition will be resold. Items that are torn, damaged and not fit for reuse are stripped mechanically to fibres and turned into goods such as rugs and gloves, while those that cannot be upcycled will be tapped as material reinforcements in some types of concrete.
