Service with passion

As an outgoing person who likes to interact with people, Ms Kirsten Kwek knew that facilities management was her calling after she studied the module for her diploma in Green Building and Sustainability at Temasek Polytechnic.

Every day is a new journey for me and I take residents’ feedback as opportunities to learn new ways of solving different issues. A solution that works for Mr Lim may not work for Mr Tan as each of their problems are uniquely different,” said the 25-year-old Senior Property Officer (Ang Mo Kio-Hougang) at Ang Mo Kio Town Council.

“At the end of the day, when the issues are resolved, seeing the smiles on their faces is the job satisfaction that I enjoy the most. It also makes going the extra mile even more rewarding,” added Ms Kwek, who still loves the job, which she started in 2017.

Ms Kwek’s passion for serving residents and listening to their feedback is evident in how promptly she attends to the cases presented to her.

She recalled, in 2020, a house in Blk 670 Hougang Ave 8 that caught fire due to an overloaded extension plug during Chinese New Year. “The house was badly damaged. The owner was an elderly person who lived alone, so I gathered resources to render our help.”

Despite it being the festive period, she quickly got cleaners to clean and clear the debris in the unit, and asked a contractor to help with the repainting.

In September, Ms Kwek rushed down to Blk 937 Hougang Street 92 at 10pm after the whole block encountered a power outage. The water supply to the top two units was also disrupted. “I reassured the affected residents that we were working on it and quickly got a technician to restore everything by midnight. We later found out that the power outage was caused by water seeping into one of the linkway’s lamp posts during a downpour. The lamp post was connected to the block’s power supply, which cut it off,” said Ms Kwek.

She also shared that she assisted a hair salon owner at Block 339 Ang Mo Kio Ave 1 recently. “Her toilet was choked, so we helped to open the manhole, checked what caused the chokage and helped to solve the problem,” said Ms Kwek.

Summing up the essence of her job, Ms Kwek said accuracy and efficiency are critical in her scope of work. “I will usually prioritise my tasks daily and ensure that I complete them by the end of the day. If I’m unable to solve the residents’ issues immediately, I will inform them and assure them that I will get things done.”
