With a background deeply rooted in service, Jason, a former Navy regular-turned-property officer, embodies a blend of discipline and empathy. He said: “I believe in active listening and trust-building, and trust is the foundation of strong relationships.” These skills have helped him take a proactive stance to better understand residents’ needs, address reported concerns, and anticipate potential issues.
He cited the case of two Yellow Flame trees that were causing a nuisance to a resident at Blk 544 Hougang Ave 8. The trees have wide-spreading, umbrella-shaped crowns that provide excellent shade. However, leaves have been falling into the resident’s flat. “After inspecting the site, I decided to bring in my horticulture colleague, Joven, who has the relevant expertise, to better advise and discuss this issue with the resident.” Three days after the meeting, a contractor was called in to prune the trees.
“We empathise with the resident’s frustration as they have to clear the leaves daily,” said Joven, who brings eight years of horticultural management experience from military camps to the Town Council. Pruning may alleviate the problem for around three to six months. “In the meantime, we have drafted a proposal to the HDB to replace the trees with more suitable species to prevent recurring problems,” he added.
In another case, Jason also worked with the horticulture team to spearhead the installation of hedges as noise-reducing barriers at Blk 440 Hougang Ave 8 after receiving feedback that residents’ sleep was disturbed by people hanging out late at night at a nearby community space.
A good team environment is essential in the Town Council when managing the estates. Jason and Joven have shown how effective teamwork allows the expertise and experience of different departments to come together to address immediate concerns, resulting in better outcomes and constant improvement to meet residents’ needs.
