During the Chinese New Year celebrations, you may find yourself surrounded by used hongbaos (red packets). The time-honoured tradition of giving hongbaos to children by married couples, or to parents by working adults, as a symbol of blessing, adds a layer of joy and anticipation to the festivity.

Here are some ideas of what we can do with the empty red packets after the Chinese New Year.
Recycle in designated bins
As part of our sustainability efforts, the Ang Mo Kio Town Council has collaborated with Singapore’s No. 1 Residential Electricity Retailer, Geneco to set up hongbao recycling bins at our four town council offices and a service centre. The collected hongbaos will be sent to a paper recycling company to remove all contaminants and repurpose them into other new products. From now until 31 March 2024, you can drop off your empty hongbaos in these dedicated recycling bins to give them a new lease of life.
Reuse for next Chinese New Year decorations
Get creative with used hongbaos! Instead of using new red packets to decorate your home during Chinese New Year, you can save this year’s used hongbaos and reuse them for next year’s festive decorations. From lanterns to fish to paper flowers, you can easily find the instructions online for decorative crafts you can make with hongbaos. Alternatively, let your children be the creative masters and make their own unique Chinese New Year ornaments.

Upcycle into useful items
Do-it-yourself (DIY) can save you money and have a positive impact on your mental health and relationships. You can use the empty hongbaos to make some useful items, such as small paper boxes or baskets to store your accessories. The process of DIY can help relieve stress, and completing a craft can give you a sense of accomplishment. You can also find joy and improve your relationships by doing these crafts with your family and friends.
