Fires can easily start in common areas such as lift lobbies, staircase landings and common corridors when these areas are cluttered or caused by thoughtless and careless behaviour.
Mr Sura Nur Bahri Riswanda, Property Officer (Fernvale) at AMKTC, recalls a fire near a flat’s rubbish chute in Fernvale earlier this year. “Someone had passed by and threw a lit cigarette onto several potted plants that were discarded there, which started a fire.”
Fortunately, the fire was put out quickly and no one was injured. “But the wall and water pipe near the rubbish chute were charred and had to be repainted,” said Mr Sura.
During routine inspections, Mr Sura has also noticed residents placing or hanging items in the dry or wet riser compartment. “We will ask them to remove these items because there is also a gas chamber meter in the riser. If you hang things in there, they will loosen the pipeline and cause a gas leakage,” he explained.
Here are Mr Sura’s important fire safety tips for a safe living environment:
- Do not place combustible items like wooden and styrofoam boxes and Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs) in common areas.
- Do not throw flammable items such as joss sticks, cigarette butts and oil into the rubbish chute.
- Do not store any personal items in the riser and hose reel compartments so that they can be easily accessible during emergencies.
