Ang Mo Kio Town Centre is set to get even more vibrant after it undergoes a major upgrade.
Speaking at a National Day celebration event in Teck Ghee, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced a list of upgrading plans in Ang Mo Kio, including for the town centre. The upgrade will stretch from the square outside AMK Hub and 51@AMK through the outdoor shopping street and all the way to Ang Mo Kio Central Stage. The first phase of work is slated to start by the second quarter of 2023.
Nestled in the heart of Ang Mo Kio, the town centre has been a place where residents as well as visitors from other parts of Singapore frequent for a wide choice of merchandise and food, and to hang out with friends or even make new friends.
Mdm Linda Lim, 68, who has lived in Ang Mo Kio for 30 years, said: “I like visiting the fruit stalls and hawker centre here. I have made friends with many of the stall owners.”
She was seen chilling at the town centre with Mdm Tan Gek Zeng, 80. Mdm Lim said: “I got to know Mdm Tan two years ago when I met her resting in the open space. We became friends and have lots to chat about now whenever we meet here.”
Ms Sari Asih, 38, also enjoys patronising the businesses in the town centre.
She said: “I can get groceries and household items easily in the neighbourhood shops. The atmosphere here is friendly and I do not feel awkward joining in conversations with others who are relaxing in the open areas.”
Constructed in 1976, the town centre has undergone numerous renovation and revamping works to cater to the evolving needs of residents. In 2019, a collection of 3D floor and wall murals added colour to the town centre to rejuvenate the area and attract more visitors.
Seven-year-old Idika Bhasin said: “My parents take me here for taekwondo class every week. I am happy to get a cookie or ice cream treat after my lesson. I also see many colourful wall murals and some of them show what life was like in Singapore a long time ago.”
