Did you know that there are two urban farms nestled on top of multi-storey carparks in Ang Mo Kio? One is located at Block 700 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6, which started operating in 2019, and the newest addition is at Block 946A Hougang Street 92.
Repurposing these under-utilised spaces for urban farming is part of the initiatives by the Singapore Food Agency to achieve “30 by 30”, the national goal of producing 30% of our nutritional needs locally by 2030.

Mr Gaurav Saraf, CEO and founder of Greenhood farm at Block 946A Hougang Street 92, said: “Operating a farm on a carpark rooftop can maximise land efficiency and reduce the need for acquiring additional land, which often comes at the expense of natural habitats.”
“We also help to reduce our carbon footprint as we grow and sell the vegetables directly to the local community, thus reducing the need for imports.”
Commencing its construction in May 2022, Greenhood farm spans 1,808 sqm, which is the size of four basketball courts. Currently, it grows 12 types of vegetables, such as chye sim, kale and various herbs.
Mr Gaurav said: “When we officially launch the farm in July this year, residents can purchase the produce through a weekly subscription model via our website and receive six packets of vegetables each week.” Residents can also pre-order the vegetables and pick them up directly from the farm.
“The vegetables can stay fresh in the fridge for up to two weeks,” he said. As it scales up its operation by the end of this year, the production capacity can double to 80 tonnes per year.

Sustainable farming practices such as aeroponics technology are being deployed in the farm. “Agriculture consumes about 70% of the world’s freshwater supply, and fresh water is a fast depleting resource. So this technique, which cultivates plants in the air with intermittent watering and recirculating system, helps to save 10 times water compared to traditional farming,” he added.
Unlike indoor farms, which use LED lighting technology to grow their vegetables, Greenhood farm uses natural sunlight. It also uses artificial intelligence-based climate and fertigation control to ensure the vegetables receive ideal growing conditions and sufficient nutrients. Mr Gaurav plans to install other sustainable features, such as rainwater harvesting and solar panels, later this year.
Residents can visit the farm twice a week by booking a paid tour via WhatsApp at 8903 1316. During the tour, residents can learn about the farm’s operating processes and safety standards, as well as try freshly harvested produce.
