If you walk by Blk 550 Ang Mo Kio Ave 10, you might notice a small reading corner in front of the Motz convenience store.
The Motz Bookuu Corner is set up based on three simple principles: integrity, sharing and kindness. The concept is simple: take a book, share a book. The driving forces behind the initiative are Mr Hisham and Ms Liza, proud store owners and residents of Ang Mo Kio.
“The inspiration came from Liza’s brother, who wanted to start a community library to encourage reading,” said Hisham, who also shared a passion for reading and was determined to spread this love in the neighbourhood.
“When someone drops by to browse the shelves, it also helps to spark conversations, forging new friendships and strengthening community ties,” he added.
The couple first started the initiative in January 2023 with just two layers of books on a shelf. Today, it is packed with various genres, including young adult fiction, self-help books, financial guides and more.
The books are donations from nearby residents, a testament to the community’s generosity. “Sometimes we are surprised to find books that mysteriously ‘appear’ without us knowing. You might be able to find a Geronimo Stilton series of children’s books now; the next, it’s gone, taken by someone eager to read it,” he said.
The reading corner is popular among children, foreign workers and domestic helpers. Even after the convenience store closes for the day, the bookshelf remains accessible to those who crave a good read late at night.
A little advice: While the reading corner welcomes all book lovers to come and pick up some gems to read, please be considerate and ensure the space is clean and tidy for everyone to enjoy.
