You may have seen the blue recycling bins in your neighbourhood. But do you really know what can be put into them?
According to the National Environment Agency (NEA), about 40 per cent of the items placed in the blue bins cannot be recycled. That’s because these items are either contaminated with food and liquids, or they are simply not recyclable. Hence, a new recycling mascot named Bloobin has been introduced early this year to nurture proper recycling habits.
Here are three simple steps from Bloobin to help you start recycling right:
1 Check the items before disposing
Common items that can be recycled include those made of paper, plastic, glass and metal. While e-waste such as light bulbs, batteries and computers can be recycled, they should be placed into e-waste bins instead (check here to find your nearest e-waste collection points). You can find out what is suitable for recycling using NEA’s list of items.
2 Clean the recyclables
Make sure the items are not contaminated with food or liquids. For example, shampoo bottles need to be rinsed and dried before being put into the blue bin. If the items cannot be cleaned, dispose of them as general waste.
3 Recycle your items
Simply bring the recyclables down to your block and put them into the blue bins placed at every block in the estates.
