Our heartlands became vibrant once again in August, as carnivals, fireworks and other physical activities made a comeback in celebration of Singapore’s 57th birthday. Trees decorated with crocheted artworks done by residents, National Day light decorations and Observance Ceremonies all added to the cheer and lent a feeling of togetherness to residents.
When the NRP is fully completed in the first quarter of 2023, residents can look forward to a wide range of facilities such as extended jogging tracks, upgraded open space at Blks 535 and 537 and the redevelopment of Serangoon North Neighbourhood Park.

Part-time tutor Ms Lynette Kwan, 43, was glad to be at the Fernvale National Day Celebrations & Fireworks Extravaganza. She said: “My kids were extremely excited when I took them to the event in our neighbourhood on the eve of National Day. They couldn’t stop talking about it the next day.”
She added that being able to celebrate the nation’s birthday with so many residents made her proud to be a Singaporean, especially when people have not been able to gather for physical National Day events for the past two years due to Covid-19 restrictions.
“Singing National Day songs, waving the Singapore flag and watching the beautiful fireworks lighting up the night sky with my neighbours made us feel the togetherness as one people, one nation, one Singapore!”
72-year-old Mr Zuhairi Ismail, who attended the National Day Family Carnival held at Cheng San Community Club with his grandchildren, said: “The young ones had fun with the carnival rides and games, while the adults enjoyed the stage performances. Most importantly, the event was also a chance for us to bond with our neighbours.”
He felt himself bursting with pride when the participants recited the Singapore pledge and sang the National Anthem together at the carnival. Mr Ismail felt it is important, especially for the younger generation, to cultivate a sense of unity.
“We have come a long way as Singapore celebrates its 57th birthday. I hope we will continue to stay strong and resilient for many more 57 years, and successfully overcome all challenges that come our way.”
